Ever wonder how other teachers are using Voki? No need to just wonder anymore. Check out the variety of ways Voki is being utilized in Vipula’s Tackk (a fun way to create an informational collage and share about a topic.)

This presentation (Click on any of the screenshots to get directed to it) shares how teachers can use Voki and Voki Presenter. In fact, the presentation is made with Voki Presenter! It gives tips and pointers to teachers who may not realize the different interesting ways Voki can be used in the classroom.

Like, if you want to make your Voki speak in a different language (one that Voki doesn’t provide) you must type phonetically!

The use of different languages in the classroom provides language diversity!  Giving students the chance to interact with different languages and accents is a proactive way of having a discussion around different cultures and languages and how to react when you hear a different accent or language. And if you are an ESL teacher, those students who may be nervous about speaking a new language, may feel more comfortable hearing their native language in the classroom and seeing their classmates interact with that language in a positive way.

It’s great speaking practice. Students can record their voices and listen to how they sound. They can compare their own voices to Voki voices. For those students that are less prone to participate if they have to speak in front of the entire class, their Voki can speak for them.

Hello Voki users!

My name is Heather Brown and I am the new Community Manager at Voki. One of the reasons why I joined the Voki Team is because—as a teacher– I see such potential in Voki. It truly is a groundbreaking tool for students and teachers. I believe that if Voki and educators work together, we will be able to revolutionize the way students engage with curriculum and the way teachers engage with students.

So, let me backtrack for a second and tell you a little bit about me. I am a New Yorker, born and raised in Manhattan. My mother is a teacher, my father is a teacher, and my sister is a teacher.

One might say teaching is my family’s “family business.”

I’ve taught in schools all over NYC for seven years. During my travels, I noticed a few harrowing things:

  1. Many students weren’t engaged
  1. Many teachers were overwhelmed
  1. New curricula and common core standards were making numbers 1. and 2. even worse.

It’s clear that we can’t possibly solve these issues overnight.

But, it is my belief that a good first step is helping teachers feel more comfortable with what technology can offer them in their classrooms.

It can be scary to try something new. It can be hard to see the benefits of utilizing the digital space as an academic tool.  It can feel like just another new task to add to the pile of duties you already have. All of these feelings are very real and understandable.

But, I’ll share something I learned my first year as a teacher.  A phrase I still whisper to myself seven years later– “You have to lean into discomfort.” Besides, this is something that we ask our students to do every single day! Shouldn’t we lead by example and show them that even as an adult it is okay to be fearful of failing as long as you push through that fear?   Well, you know what my answer is. Of course, we must show our students that we, too, are learners who fail and fail again, until we succeed.

And you won’t be alone. There are so many teachers out there who are learning just like you, how to integrate technology into the classroom. Let us help. Voki and your fellow teachers are prepared to be your guides through the educational digital landscape.

Now, to those of you who are already taking advantage of the benefits that being a technologically savvy teacher can bring, BRAVO!  Keep doing what you’re doing.  Your students thank you for engaging them and bringing learning to life. But, remember, you have a responsibility to share your digital experiences with other educators who may need some guidance. Take them under your wing, share with them, and support them.

As for me, I am here to make teaching just a little bit easier for you.

  • I will post meaningful content across all of the Voki platforms—including this one.
  • I will listen to your needs, wants, frustrations, and feedback.
  • I will keep you abreast of the changes occurring at Voki Headquarters.
  • I will motivate you during your most challenging times.
  • I will facilitate the sharing of innovative ideas within our community.

At Voki, we believe that a close-knit community of teachers sharing their knowledge, technological expertise, and creativity, is a MUST in the movement to educate and engage.

The Importance of Time Management in Class

timemanagement_1600x900If you are a teacher, you know that you need to have really good time management skills in order to finish that daily to-do list. So, time management is a very important skill to have. Teacher can use this in the classroom to optimize learning opportunities for students.

Time management is important because it helps you prioritize your work. After you have your list of daily tasks down, you need to figure out what you should do first. Those that are important should be the first ones you should tackle. Should the students learn this lesson first or do this activity first?

With time management, it helps you get more things done in less time. Once you map out your tasks and time, you can figure out how much time you can put into the task. Also, it can help you map out other fun activities in class!

Encouraging students to be creative

C1v2-3-300x187Everyone can be creativity, so why limit it in class? Students should be encourage to think outside the box whenever possible and be open to new ideas inside and outside of the classroom. Therefore, educators should encourage them to be more creative. Let’s find out how we can encourage our students to be creative!

Encourage risk-taking.

In order for students to be creative and innovative, risk-taking must be encouraged in class. Teachers must create a safe environment that allows risk-taking. Let your students know that mistakes are acceptable and allow them do redo their work.

Encourage collaboration.

Two heads are better than one.  Allow your students to work together, either in pairs or in groups. This would encourage them to share different ideas and perspectives. Working in pairs or groups can help students develop new approaches to solving problems.

Encourage questioning.

It is important to encourage your students to ask questions. This is how they can learn in class. Give your students opportunities in class to ask questions. Check here for some suggestion form the Voki Team on how to encourage your students to ask more questions.

Tips on Teaching Creativity

dsc00022Creativity is important in order for a classroom to be successful. Every student has the potential of being creative. It is up to the educator to help them cultivate it. So how can you help them in class? Here are some tips that can help!

1. Think outside the box.

In order to help your students to be creative in class, you have to be creative too. Do not confine yourself to the set standards. Be open to new ideas and try to find ways that can transform some of your lessons. If you run of ideas, connect with other teachers and ask them how they teach their lessons!

2. Encourage your students.

Encourage your students to be creative by setting an example of what creativity is. If you show them, they are sure to follow. Always encourage multiple viewpoints and different ideas. There’s no room for creative thought if there’s always a definitive right and wrong answer!

3. Give feedback.

Giving feedback on your students’ work can help them understand their ideas better. Find out how you can provide students with effective feedback.

Helping Students with ADHD/ADD

Impulse-ControlWhat is ADHD/ADD? It stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/Attention Deficit Disorder. It affects about 3-5% of children and adults in the United States. Some characteristics of ADHD/ADD include:

  • Inattentiveness, but not hyperactive or impulsive
  • Hyperactive and impulsive, but can concentrate
  • Inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive

You might notice one of your students who may have ADHD/ADD. You can make a difference in your student’s life by helping them. Here are some ways that you can start:

Have seating arrangements.

If you know your student can be distracted when they site near a window or door, move their seat to a different location. It might be helpful to sit your student with ADHD/ADD in front of your desk to help them focus. It is also useful if you arrange your classroom seating in rows instead of sitting around tables or facing one another.

Provide clear and concise instructions.

Give instructions one at a time. If the instructions are complex, break it down into smaller parts. Also, you can have several other students repeat your instructions to give the student with ADHD/ADD the opportunity to hear it. Make sure that the assignment is not too long or too difficult because they might avoid doing it.

Work with parents.

It is best if you partner up with their parents to make sure that their child is ready to learn in the classroom. Ask parents to communication with you regularly about the problems their child experiences in school. Have the parents help their child organize their papers or homework during the evening and help them prepare for school next day.

Top 3 Ways Teachers Can Stop Bullies

October is National BullyingBullying Prevention Month. As you know, bullying is a major problem in school. Students who are bullied can experience negative physical, school, and mental health issues. It affects everyone: the person being bullied, the bully, and the witnesses. Whether it is the classroom, the cafeteria, library, on the playground, or bathroom, it is up to the teachers to help prevent bullying in school.

Here, Voki have 3 tips that can help you and other school administrators prevent bullying from happening in school.

 

  1. Help your students understand bullying.

Explain to your students what bullying is and how to stand up to it safely. Tell them that bullying is unacceptable. Encourage them to speak to a trusted adult if they see someone being bullies or if they are bullied. Give your students tips on how to stand up to bullies and if it doesn’t work, walk away.

 

  1. Create a safe and supportive environment.

You should create a classroom culture of inclusion and respect that welcomes all students. Make sure that your students interact safely. Find out where students can have a higher risk of bullying, such as bathrooms, playgrounds, and cafeteria. This is where there is little or no adult supervision. Establish ground rules in in class so students can help create this positive and respectful environment. Always remember that you are a role model for them so you must follow the rules yourself.

 

  1. Stop Bullying on the spot.

If you spot bullying in school, stop it immediately. Do not ignore it and do think that they can work it out without help. If another teacher is needed, do not hesitate to ask. Talk to the students individually and do not force other students to say what they saw publicly. Model respectful behavior when you intervene because you are their role model.
