Celebrating Black History Month

Celebrating Black History Month

We at Voki are always considering how to help you make learning more meaningful in your classroom. We know that your goal as a teacher is to foster a love of learning through an engaging curriculum. If you are already following along with us here on the Voki blog, you know the importance of seeing through your students’ eyes  and understanding what makes them tick. That is why so many rockstar teachers are always looking for more ways to use tech in everyday classroom routines. It is our goal to help, and make it easy & fun. It may seem intimidating, but it can be quite simple with the right technology.

An increasing number of studies have shown “increased student engagement and motivation when students have the opportunity to use tech for authentic learning experiences. Students find technology more engaging because it bridges the gap between their digital lives outside of school and their too often non-digital lives inside of school”. (More about this here.)

Many teachers are looking for more ways to bridge that digital gap in their classrooms.

That is why we are excited and honored to present to you with these new historic figures for Black History Month! Presenting…

Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass was a leader of the abolitionist movement and a former slave. He spent his life fighting for the betterment of the lives of African-Americans. He was also a supporter of women’s rights. Among other things, he was a self-taught scholar, wrote several books, and acted as Abolitionist advisor to Abraham Lincoln.

Coming Soon… Thurgood Marshall!

Thurgood Marshall successfully argued the Brown v. Board of Education case that would make segregated schools no longer legal.  He was the first African-American Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was an activist from the South whose courageous choice not to surrender her seat to a white passenger and her subsequent arrest sparked outrage and led to the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. Parks’ decision to defy this segregation law in the 1950s was a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was a non-violent anti-apartheid activist who became the first black president of South Africa. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his efforts to abolish South Africa’s oppressive infrastructure.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader and minister during the Civil rights Movement. He was an advocate of peaceful protest and employed this strategy in his fight to gain blacks equal rights. He is well-known for his “I Have A Dream” speech.

We know that you strive to bring learning to life in your classrooms. We’ve seen how you dress up like the characters in books, write songs about fractions, put on plays about greek mythology. You are constantly doing your best to create excitement around the topics you teach. We admire your dedication, but more importantly we want to help you imbue your lessons with the kind of energy that gets your students excited about coming to school everyday.

This month we’d love to see how your students delve into history about leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela and their fierce and peaceful movements to bring equality to the oppressed. Will your students feel empowered by Rosa Parks’ courageous choice to break the law for the civil rights of many?

Here are some ideas we have for how you can integrate Voki and these heroic figures into your lessons this month (and hopefully beyond.)

  • Play “Black History Month Jeopardy” using our new historical characters as the question askers as shown here.
  • Ask students to create avatars explaining history quadrants of before and after each historical figure’s contributions to society. See a teacher’s similar project here
  • Create healthy competitions amongst these icons with our brand new product, Voki Hangouts! Have students debate (representing themselves as these heroic avatars) which historical figure facilitated the most change in their communities. Never miss a valuable student comment or discussion with Voki Hangouts!

We can’t wait to see you expand the historical narrative in your classrooms. If you’ve created a rock star lesson using Voki avatars, we’d LOVE to see it. We love featuring videos and pictures of teachers and students who use and love Voki. Send any videos or photos to feedback@voki.com

Warmly,

The Voki Team

“I dwell in possibility.” –Emily Dickinson

Hey Voki friend!

We’re kicking off this edition of The Voki Weekly with a quote that resonates well in the ed tech community. You can say that poetry was to Dickinson what technology is to today’s classroom—both are vehicles to endless possibilities. Let’s take a look at all the things Voki has made possible this week with its avatar technology:

  • Press. If you’re looking for a well-written read on what it’s like for a company to enter the ed tech arena—the challenges and the excitement—and that also covers the new legislation springing up in an age where students are now accessing technology in the classroom, this article is for you. A special behind-the-scenes look, this article showcases some of the pioneering brands in the biz—and what their products specialize in. We’re thrilled that Voki received a spotlight in this kidscreen news.
  • Trump and Hillary Vokis now available. Have you seen the new Trump and Hillary Vokis yet? They bear a striking resemblance to their Republican and Democratic counterparts. Now’s a good time to start thinking about how you will be teaching about the election come the beginning of school.
  • Voki for Education app now available. Looking for a convenient way for you and your students to access Voki? How about from our new app? You can download it for free in the iTunes App store onto all iOS mobile devices. It’s a perfect way for your students to work on projects in the classroom and at home, and it’s also a great assessment tool.
  • Hooks. Print cards are getting a little old, aren’t they? Have your students make their deserving dads a Voki card for Father’s Day (6/19). Did you see our Flag Day hook narrated by President Reagan? If you haven’t, you can check it out here. Be on the lookout for the Summer Solstice (6/20), Don’t Let Nouns Get You Down Day! (6/23), and Camera Day (6/29) hooks. We’re especially excited about the hook coming out soon honoring the birthday of Eric Carle (6/25)—you know, the tissue paper illustrator and author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar? Remember, all our hooks are posted on our Facebook, Twitter, and G+ pages.
  • Lessons. Last week, we published 4th Grade Social Studies. The topic was New York: The Early Years. Check out the free lesson here. For Level 3 Subscribers, the entire unit is available on voki.com. Today, Kindergarten Science will be going live on the site. The topic is The Five Senses. Be sure to check out our Facebook, Twitter, and G+ pages today for the link to the free lesson.

Remember to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Google + and on our blog. We love engaging with our Voki community! If you have any questions, ideas, or feedback, please feel free to email us at feedback@voki.com .

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Catherine Alvino, Digital Marketing Coordinator

Voki and Non-Fiction Text Unite!

Voki and Non-Fiction Text Unite!

paschall blog post

This week we have our very own ambassador Emily Paschall with us, blogging about how she was able to integrate Voki into her non-fiction text lesson. Watch the video at the end of  her blog post to get an insider’s look on what this lesson really looks like in the classroom.

Hi fellow teachers!

I am a third grade teacher at Tanner High School, a small K-12 school in Athens, Alabama. I have worked for Limestone County Schools for four years now. My whole purpose for this blog is provide teachers worldwide with new and fun ideas on how to implement technology in the classroom!

This year, our school superintendent, Dr. Tom Sisk, implemented our Digital Passport Initiative which has allowed for our 3rd and 4th graders to be 1:1 with their very own MacBook Air! Within the next 4 years, all students in grades 3-12 will have their own MacBooks. What an exciting experience this has been so far! There are so many more opportunities where I can provide a deeper understanding of the standards now than I could have ever imagined!

Recently, we were studying non-fiction text in our Wonders Reading Curriculum. The different texts we read all week were centered around different types of energy. I knew before the week began that this was going to be a difficult topic for my students to comprehend, so I collaborated with my technology facilitator and we came up with a simple and fun project for the students to do.

If you haven’t used Voki.com in your classroom yet, you are missing out! A voki is an educational tool that allows you to create your own talking avatar! What kid wouldn’t love that? You can find a use for a Voki in all subject areas.  I have included a video of myself teaching HOW to use Voki in the classroom! My hope is that this provides you with a fun, simple, and quick way to make learning more enjoyable for your students!

Thanks for reading!

Interviews with Educators | Christina Martidou

Interviews with Educators | Christina Martidou

Christina

Every month, we like to learn how teachers use Voki in the classroom. This month, we have another great interview with a tech-savvy educator! Christina Martidou is an English teacher who loves to use Voki to celebrate holidays!

Christina Martidou

My name is Christina Martidou and I have been working as an English teacher for the past eleven years. I currently work freelance as a private tutor and part- time for the British Council in Thessaloniki, Greece. My students vary from young learners to teenagers. I mainly prepare learners for the Cambridge ESOL exams, develop my own technology-based materials and love writing on my new blog (http://christinamartidou.edublogs.org). I have been using Voki since 2011!

What are your goals using Voki?

To make my ELT lessons more fun and engaging! With Voki the use of technology becomes meaningful!

How do you use Voki?

I mainly use Voki with my younger students especially to celebrate holidays like Halloween and Christmas. I also love the idea of assigning homework via Voki or giving oral instructions in this alternative way.

What are your 3 favorite things about Voki?

  • The fact that you can record your own voice and add sound effects to it!
  • It’s easy-to-use and safe!
  • Avatars can then be e-mailed or embedded in any social media site, blog or website.

What would you add to the Voki product?

I would extend the time limit of the recordings, add more celebrities among the speaking avatars and make it available for iPads & iPhones!

Do you have any Voki tricks up your sleeve?

I use Voki to play riddle games or a celebrity ‘guess who’ game!

Christina made a PhotoPeach presentation. Click the picture below to see it!

My Love (in brackets) By Nuala Ní Dhomhaill (Irish Poem)

My Love (in brackets) By Nuala Ní Dhomhaill (Irish Poem)

Mo Ghrá-sa (idir lúibíní)

le Nuala Ní Dhomhaill
Níl mo ghrá-sa
mar bhláth na n-airní
a bhíonn i ngairdín
(nó ar chrann ar bith)

is má tá aon ghaol aige
le nóiníní
is a chluasa a fhásfaidh siad
(nuair a bheidh sé ocht dtroigh síos).

Ní haon ghlaise cheolmhar
iad a shúile
(táid róchóngarach dá chéile
ar an gcéad dul síos)

is más slim é síoda
tá ribí a ghruaige
(mar bhean dhubh Shakespeare)
ina wire deilgní.

Ach is cuma sin.
Tugann sé dom
úlla
(is nuair a bhíonn sé i ndeá-ghiúmar caora fíniúna).

My Love (in brackets)

By Nuala Ní Dhomhaill

My love is not
Like the blackthorn blossom
That grows in gardens
(Or on any tree at all)

And if he has anything to do
With daisies
They will grow out of his ears
(When he’s eight feet under)

No harmonising green
His eyes (or No Musical stream his eyes)
(They’re too close together
To begin with)

And if silk is smooth
The hairs on his head
(Like Shakespeare’s Dark Lady)
Are thorny wires

But it doesn’t matter
He gives me
Apples
(And grapes when he’s in good humour)
